Changes in your Hair

Sheila

Typically I hear so many questions in my line of work as a hairstylist along with guidance on styling, color transformations to bridal styling or which cut will suite my personality.

The biggest topic seems to be hair loss which can occur at anytime and at any age. Just like skin, our hair matures as well where we have to adjust what we use and how we approach maintenance.

There are so many causes to hair loss and our first step is to notice.

  • Is it falling out at the root or is it strand breakage?
  • Do you notice spots on the scalp where hair is absent or is the hair receding?

When you notice these changes your hairstylist can offer some advice with the basics.

First, hair will go through life cycles of resting and shedding. Sometimes we lose up to 100 hairs a day. Shedding is temporary. A great recommendation for hair care products will help. Remember that what you once used in the past, may not work for the present. Your stylist can also recommend using a bond builder when receiving blonding or coloring services to protect the bonds of the hair from breaking down which can result in hair loss. Using an excessive amount of heat styling tools will also cause hair loss so please give your hair a much needed break, turn those irons to low and use a good heat protect.

Other known causes such as disease, illness, hormones, aging, stress, medications, rapid weight loss, excessive overuse of supplements, nutrient deficiency, hereditary, poor diet, radiation, damage to the root or hair follicles are just a few that contribute to hair loss. Physical or emotional stress will cause what is known as Telogen Effluvium which is when the hair will be seen in your brush or when you run your hands through hair particularly when shampooing.

I recommend seeing a dermatologist or your medical practitioner for this condition. They are skilled in your medical history and can recommend a course of treatment. this is not a one size fits all, we are all individual, so what works for one person may not work for another.

Please don’t buy into fad quick fixes, this is not a quick fix. There are hormone replacement therapies, hair loss replacement, laser therapy and much more the medical community can offer.

Before introducing essential oils, extra supplements such as Collagen, Biotin, Nutrafol, or certain vitamins, please consult your practitioner as these are known to possibly interfere with current conditions and medications.

As for me, your licensed Cosmetologist, I offer lots of advice on the proper hair care products. I believe in exfoliating the scalp to rid the build up so that blood circulation is stimulated and new cells regenerate. I recommend using less heat to style the hair, brushing in the am and pm to remove tangles, conditioning treatments, using silk hair ties/scrunchies, silk pillow cases, heat protect tools, low maintenance color services and avoid over washing.

I do work with hair extensions, wigs and toppers for my salon guests. We go over the care and maintenance of these great alternatives that add volume, length, coverage and thickness.

Some effective treatments include surgery as a last result.
